Waste Reduction in 2019
Zero waste week 2019 runs from the 2nd to the 6th September and is a fantastic initiative that encourages organisations, businesses, and individuals to reduce their waste, think more sustainably and make moves to lower their carbon footprint both now and in the future.
Taking care of the world around us for ourselves and future generations just makes good sense. It doesn’t mean that you have to completely eliminate all environmentally unfriendly products and habits from your life in one go. However, if you can start to make little changes to your daily routine, then you can make a big difference.
6 ways to reduce waste with this Zero Waste Week
At Dexam, it is really important to support and help our customers reduce waste in 2019 and beyond. Therefore we ensure that we provide you with a range of products to make it that little bit easier! Here are some of our most helpful products for those looking to reduce their plastic waste:
1. Food containers
Food waste is a huge problem globally, and in our culture, it’s all too easy to throw leftovers away or let food go off because we haven’t carefully planned out or meals. Our useful food containers are an excellent alternative to one-use bags and are airtight, so keep food fresher for longer. Using up leftovers and making sure that you plan your meals more carefully in order to reduce food waste will save you money and make you feel all virtuous at the same time!
2. Beeswax Wraps
We adore our beeswax wraps, which are a superb alternative to cling film or tin foil. The beautiful wraps are imprinted with attractive designs and are ideal for those making moves towards a plastic-free lifestyle. You can use them to cover or wrap food and are particularly handy for packing sandwiches to take with you for lunch or keeping cheeses fresher for longer in the fridge.
3. Silicone lids
Instead of using foil or cling film to cover up leftovers, why not invest in a few of our bright and fun silicone lids? With a 1/3 of food produced globally becoming wasted, these reusable resolutions can change the way we store and prepare food as we are made to think about our surroundings as we bring them into our kitchens.
They come in a range of great styles from fruity to floral and create an airtight seal on saucepans, bowls, and containers and can be used in the fridge, on the stove, and in the microwave too.
4. Reusable Cups
Of course, one of the most significant areas of waste we can work on is our relationship with single-use plastic bottles and disposable cups. The British public’s love of takeaway coffee equates to the use of 7 million disposable coffee cups every day, 2.5 billion every year, of which 1% are recycled out of which packaging producers only pay for 10% of the cost of packaging disposal and recycling.
So, since the 25p “latte levy” has been enforced, why not ditch your disposable cup with its complex polyethylene structure for our reusable, naturally-made Bambroo mug.
Choose from our fantastic range of eco-friendly bamboo cups in a variety of fabulous colours and patterns and start reducing your wastage today!
5. Reusable fruit and veg bags
Instead of using plastic bags to store your fruit and veg, why not invest in our lovely drawstring fruit and veg bags which you can use time and time again? You can use them to keep fruit and veg at home as well as take to the supermarket with you, so you don’t have to use the single-use ones there either – it’s a win-win.
6. Stainless steel straws
We all know how bad plastic straws are for the environment, but we also know that there are occasions that call for them such as kids’ birthday parties for example. There is a way, however, to ensure that you don’t disappoint those angelic little faces while remaining true to your green principals. Our stainless steel straws are robust, fun and can be used time and time again, so are great fun for the little ones, with no guilty conscience for you!
